Well the main riff would have to be on a guitar, but the 'techno noises' are from a keyboard or a continuum fingerboard.

How I know this is that I play one. Not a continuum, but keyboard. I can play some of DT's stuff, mostly stuff from Metropolis, and some stuff from Jordan Rudeess solo albums. Its awesome. He's a keyboard God.

Well they all are mostly the same thing, if you dont want to get technical. You can do stuff on a keyboard that you can on a synth as well as vice versa, just depends.
